Why Ghost reignited my love for web development

After more than two decades in open source and web development, discovering Ghost reminded me why I fell in love with building for the web in the first place, a platform that respects focus, craft, and community.

A long relationship with the open web

I got into open source more than two decades ago, and I have been in love with web development ever since. Over the years, I have worked with many different CMSs; from flexible and powerful to bloated and frustrating. Each one taught me something, but very few truly felt right.

Like many developers, I often found myself working around tools rather than with them.

Discovering Ghost

About four years ago, through a new role, I was introduced to Ghost. I did not expect much at first; just another CMS to learn for a job. Instead, I found something that genuinely surprised me.

Ghost felt calm. Focused. Intentional.

It was clear from the start that Ghost was not trying to be everything for everyone. It knew exactly what it was built for; publishing; and it did that exceptionally well.

Ghost respects the developer's time and the publisher's intent.

A Platform, and a community

What really made Ghost stand out for me was not just the platform itself, but the people around it. The community feels thoughtful, welcoming, and driven by quality rather than noise.

As a developer, I appreciate tools that get out of the way. Ghost does that beautifully. Clean APIs, modern architecture, sensible defaults: it feels like a system designed by people who actually build things.

Every time I work with Ghost, I enjoy the process; and that is something I do not say lightly.

Building with intention

Since discovering Ghost, I have found myself wanting to build everything with it; nothing else. Personal sites, client projects, experiments, ideas. It has reignited my excitement for the web in a way I did not expect after so many years in the industry.

Right now, Ghost is still a side project for me alongside my full-time role. But I genuinely hope to grow my income, or even a business, around it in the future.

Ghost is the platform I want to grow with.

Thank You

Thank you to everyone behind Ghost for building something that feels both modern and human. As someone who has been part of the open-source world for a long time, it is refreshing to see a platform that values clarity, focus, and craftsmanship.

Ghost reminded me why I started building for the web in the first place.

Sincerely,
Salah.
